Do you know what overdentures are? If not, we’re excited to tell you about them. Over-dentures are one of those developments in dentistry that has truly improved everyday life for many patients with dentures.
Dentures, even the really good, really expensive ones, are notorious for being troublesome. Denture adhesives don’t always work well, and the dentures feel unstable on your gums when you’re trying to chew. Or your dentures fall out. Or your jaw structure shifts and your jawbone shrinks, and your dentures are uncomfortable. Overdentures address these issues and help maintain overall jawbone and muscle health.
So what are overdentures? Overdentures are part of the dental implant family. You’re probably familiar with single implants: a titanium root is set into the jawbone, and then a tooth is affixed to the root, providing a stable, permanent, and naturally-functioning solution for your missing tooth. Overdentures make use of some of the same principles. An overdenture set can be either a complete set of teeth or a partial set that fits around your remaining natural teeth. A set of titanium implants will be installed, and the overdentures fit securely onto the implant heads. Although they are still removable, when they are in your mouth, they are locked in place and securely connected to the jawbone, thus allowing a much more natural bite and keeping your bone tissue stimulated and healthy.
